Your Lips Will Thank You!
Have you tried our NEW and IMPROVED Jane Iredale PureGloss? If you haven't you're missing out...BIG TIME. Let me tell you why.
The first thing to love about the latest PureGloss is the new super sleek packaging that boasts 35% MORE product to slap on your kisser!
The second reason to give this new gloss a try is the silky smooth feel. This gloss does not leave a sticky tack between your lips that is a common & nasty side effect of many lip products out there.
And reason numero tres (aka #3) that you are missing out if you don't try this amazing gloss is (drum roll please)....The fresh & authentic flavor of blackberry extract smothered all over your chatterbox.
But wait there's MORE! I know what you're thinking. How could there possibly be MORE to love about our new PureGloss? Sit tight and hold on, because I'm about to change the world of lip gloss as you know it.
Our gloss is more than just 18 shades of scrumptiously juicy high shine goodness. With not-so-secret ingredients such as lotus flower, blackberry, & pomegranate extracts this product soothes and protects your lips with powerful antioxidants. In addition, orange peel wax, moringa, avocado and sunflower oils condition and hydrate the delicate skin that orbits your mouth. And of course, I have to mention this gloss delivers a topical dose of vitamin E to your pucker-upper.
So, there you have it! I have listed every conceivable reason for you to come in and give our NEW & IMPROVED PureGloss a chance. We have testers of every shade available to try at the studio. My personal favorites are Beach Plum, Snow Berry, Soft Peach and Black Cherry. And with 18 shades to choose from you are bound to find a few favorites for yourself!

How to create "Incredible Shrinking Pores"
Bigger isn't always better. At least when it comes to our pores. Large pores can create a host of issues for us. We lose the desired smooth texture that is the hallmark of youthful skin. Large pores are also more likely to become clogged with debris. These pores often appear much larger and are prone to harboring bacteria, which can cause breakouts. And breakouts affect the health of our skin.
How do we create Incredible Shrinking Pores?
Lily Tomlin in The Incredible Shrinking Woman
Unlike the 1981 film "The Incredible Shrinking Woman", our methods do not involved wacky mad scientists! In fact, we have several simple ways to help you reduce the appearance of these offensive follicles.
First, wash your face with our Bioglycolic cleanser. This cleanser contains glycolic acid which is a gentle cleanser
suitable for all skin types. This deep cleansing formula is soap free,
non-irritating, and rinses completely without the need for a
post-cleansing toner or astringent.
Next use a daily resurfacer like Jan Marini's Bioclear Lotion. This amazing product uses a combination of three proven acids to address a wide range
of common skin conditions. Their ability to address the appearance of large follicles
and porous skin texture make Bioclear a must have for those with beefy pores.
Another issue with over sized pores is the tendency for face makeup to cause them to appear even more ginormous. But we have a solution for that in the form of Jane Iredale's Smooth Affair facial primer! Smooth Affair is a wonderful product that leaves your skin smoother and brighter. Your makeup goes on flawlessly and lasts longer.
Our last tip for creating Incredible Shrinking Pores is to see your esthetician for routine facials. Your esthetician will steam your face, which helps open the pores in preparation for her to expertly extract (unclog) your pores. She will also educate you on the factors that may be making your specific porous skin problems worse.

Refine Peel: Christy's Post Peel Results
I am pretty impressed with the power of the Jan Marini Refine Peel System. I had dramatic flaking and peeling on the third and fourth days. Yet, I was back to normal on day six. Using the Jan Marini products at home is a must after the treatment. I would be afraid to use anything else with my skin in such an active state of resurfacing.
My skin has responded well to the peel. I notice that my areas of hyperpigmentation look softer. My skin looks smoother and feels super soft to the touch. I'm really happy with the results after just one peel. I can't wait to complete the series over the next couple of months.
Now that I have personally experienced this amazing treatment, I am excited to offer this peel to our clients. Spring is an excellent time to renew your skin with a Refine Peel series! Your skin will be in great shape for Summer! Contact your esthetician at The Make-up and Skin Care Studio for more information.

A Heartfelt Thank You...
"I just wanted to thank you for encouraging me to have the lesion on my face looked at. It ended up being a skin cancer that I had surgically removed yesterday. Proof that even doctors need someone to look out for them! The work that you do and your dedication to your clients is commendable."
Aimee received this lovely flower arrangement & heartfelt thank you note from one of her clients who is a doctor.
This is a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do at The Make-up & Skin Care Studio. Our work is a perfect combination promoting healthy skin and revealing the beauty that comes with it. And advocating for our clients' best interest is our number one priority.

Refine Peel: Christy Days 3 & 4
My skin is peeling big time! I first noticed resurfacing on day 3. I looked in the mirror that morning and saw some white "crust" near the corner of my mouth. Honestly, I thought it was dried drool. But, when I went to wash it off, I realized that it was, in fact, flakes of skin. I took the picture below of my skin that morning.
By that afternoon, I had wide areas of resurfacing spread across my nose, mouth and chin. My skin felt slightly itchy at times throughout the day, but it was tolerable. I did find myself rubbing or lightly scratching my face a few times on day 3. So, I had to make a conscious effort to keep my hands off of my face.
By that night, I had small "curls" of skin towards the outer edge of my chin as marked by the white arrow in the image below. I also had more peeling outside of the nasolabial folds as marked by the green arrows.
Today, I have had more flaking and peeling on my forehead, between my eyes, and near my temples. My skin still feels tight and dry. I have no real discomfort.

Refine Peel: Christy Days 1 & 2
So, I survived the Refine Peel! My experience over the last two days is a little different than Aimee's. I'm not sure why. But, one of my guesses is where we fall on the Fitzpatrick Scale. Aimee is more fair complected than I am. She is most likely a 2 on the Fitzpatrick Scale. Being, a combination of Italian & Portuguese on my dad's side, I'm a 3. To find out your complexion click HERE.
The image above is right before the peel process. I'm anxiously awaiting to "feel the burn".
We started with double cleansing the skin. Aimee's fingers were fast and furious as she got to work removing my make-up.
My skin has been thoroughly cleansed and prepped. The Refine Peel System has a special prepping solution. It's rather strong stuff!
Next, the peel was applied to my skin. It didn't immediately sting. But, by the time she finished the first pass I was feeling it. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being as painful as back labor without an epidural. Yes, been there and done that!). I was at about a 2 on the pain scale.
The stinging increased to a level 3. About 3 minutes in, after the first pass it went back down to a 2. I did fan myself to help ease the stinging. The second pass seemed to be slightly less intense for me. Again, after about 3 minutes the stinging decreased into an itchy sensation. This was the lesser intense part of the peel for me. However, Aimee experienced more discomfort during this stage of the process.
After two passes of the peel solution the retinol activator was applied. For me this was the most intense part of the process. I was experiencing a level of discomfort that reached about a 4. I had my fan going full speed! This only lasted for about 2-3 minutes. Aimee on the other hand, said that this was the less intense part for her.
The image above was taken right after the peel. As you can see, I have no redness. I had slightly pink blotches around my mouth, but that is it.
Today my skin feels dry and tight, like I've spent a day at the beach and got a little sun & salt on my face. The top of my nose has a few small bumps. And that is it. I still have not experienced any redness or further discomfort.
I am washing my face with Age Intervention Gentle Cleanser twice a day. Then I apply C-esta Serum and Transformation Cream morning and night. And of course, a layer of sun protection during the day. I did put on more C-esta and Transformation Cream around noon today, because my skin felt so dry.

Refine Peel: Christy's Pre-peel Confessions
As Aimee's first Refine peel experience comes to a close, I get ready to give it a try. I've had mild resurfacing peels before, but I haven't tried anything as aggressive as the Refine Peel System. You can click on the video clip below to see my pre-peel confessions.
It's clear, in this amateur video that "film making" is not my thing.
I'll definitely stick to make-up & skin care as my profession!
It was definitely a much more intense experience than I've ever had in the treatment room! Stay tuned for a detailed post on how it went!
Refine Peel: Aimee Day 6 & 7
Aimee's skin is now resurfacing as it progresses towards the outer zones of her face. She says that her skin still feels a little chapped but it is getting better.
In the photo below, you can see flaky patches developing on the side of the cheek where the arrows are marked. Also note the area encircled in blue. It is not uncommon to develop a few blemishes as your pores clear during a resurfacing treatment or facial.
Based on how her skin is feeling, Aimee predicts that she is near the end of the flaking and peeling she has been experiencing over the last week.

Studio Clients: Generations
We had the absolute pleasure of having three generations grace our studio on Saturday. These lovely local ladies have two very important events this Summer. Jessica (right) and her sister (not pictured) are getting married two months apart!
Needless to say, Stacy (left) and her daughters are very busy with wedding preparations. And we were happy to help by creating custom makeup looks for Jessica and her mom and grandmother (center).
We have the largest selection of Jane Iredale makeup available in town. So, finding just the right colors and textures is a snap. As you can see, we had no problem accommodating the different needs and styles that spans multiple generations.
Our makeup consultations are a free service to our clients. We also provide makeup classes, special occasion and wedding makeup services.
If you are interested in a free makeup consultation call 747-7170 to schedule.
BEST WISHES TO JESSICA!

Refine Peel System: Aimee Days 4 & 5
WOW! Aimee's skin is resurfacing like crazy! Check it out! Even in low light, you can see major areas of peeling and flaking on her forehead and chin. This photo was taken on the evening of the 4th day.
Aimee says that her skin continues to feel "chapped" in addition to the new areas of peeling. Those chapped areas will most likely loosen and flake off by tomorrow or the next day.
With or without this beautifully sunny spring weather, it is important for post-peel clients to use a broad spectrum sunscreen. Our Marini Physical Protectant has an SPF of 45 and protects against both UVA & UVB rays. This is a very light weight formula with a universal tint. This product also contains green tea extract that calms and soothes skin that has been exposed to the sun's heat and ultraviolet rays.

Refine Peel System: Aimee Day 3
Today Aimee reports that peeling did not start until later in the day. The peeling is most noticeable around her nose and the area above her upper lip.
This afternoon she noticed rough patches of skin on her chin and around her mouth. This evening those same areas started to lightly peel when she cleansed her face. Tonight, in addition to cleansing, she added the Skin Zyme mask, which will gently aid in her skin resurfacing. This remarkable product uses proteolytic enzymes to digest dead & damaged skin cells without irritating sensitive skin. This makes the Skin Zyme mask the perfect post-procedure product for the Refine Peel System.
Aimee has not reported any itching, burning, pain, or discomfort while her skin has started to resurface. We'll be back with more tomorrow...

Refine Peel System: Aimee Day 2
Aimee checked in with us today. She reports her skin feeling a little rough and on the verge of resurfacing. She also experienced redness again as she cleansed her skin. Aimee is cleansing with Age Intervention Gentle Cleanser. She then applies C-esta Serum and Transformation Cream both morning and night. During the day it is important to use one of our Jan Marini daily skin protectants with SPF.
Refine Peel System: Aimee Day 1
Jan Marini Skin Research has developed a brand new peel system and we have it! It's called the Refine Peel. This peel is a combination of salicylic, lactic and citric acids with a highly concentrated retinol activator. The retinol activator contains additional peptides and antioxidants.
To achieve the best results the peels are done in a series of three about four weeks apart. It is also vital that Jan Marini skin care products are being used at home 2-3 weeks prior to the peel and during the peel process, while the skin is resurfacing.
This peel is perfect for clients who are concerned with fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and acne.
Today we tested the Refine Peel on one of our estheticians, Aimee Pennington. The photo above is Aimee before the application of the Refine Peel.
The skin is double cleansed and prepared for the application of the Refine Peel. Frosting of the skin may occur after the peel is applied. The peel and retinol activator are not removed.
Aimee experienced mild stinging at first. Her skin had a "pins & needles" sensation. She stated that her skin felt hot at times throughout the peel application process. Aimee had minimal frosting around her nose and redness on her cheeks. Redness also developed on the area around her nose and mouth.
The redness lasted for about an hour after the peel. We expect her skin to show signs of resurfacing around the second or third day post peel. We will keep you updated on Aimee's progress over the next 5 days.
If you are interested in the Refine Peel System you may contact your esthetician at our studio. Aimee, Teresa, and Christy are all happy to answer any questions you might have.
